“45 Years”

I apologize for not having reviewed this gem weeks ago.  The wonderful Charlotte Rampling garnered an Oscar nomination for her stirring performance in this film.  My contemporaries will remember her opposite Paul Newman in “The Verdict”.  I vividly recall her disturbing role in 1974’s “The Night Porter” about a reunion of a Holocaust survivor with her Nazi torturor years after the war.

“45 Years” finds the lovely Rampling retired in the English countryside with her husband played beautifully by veteran Tom Courtenay.  He has two Oscar nominations to his credit, Best Supporting Actorin the epic “Doctor Zhivago” and Best Actor in “The Dresser” for which he also garnered a Tony for the original stage play.

The seemingly happy couple are about to celebrate their 45th anniversary having had to cancel a 40th party due to his heart surgery.  A secret from his earlier life emerges and its effect on the couple is palpable.  Rampling is a consummate pro and it is a delight to watch her work.  She is beautiful and compelling onscreen.  If you can find this film on Netflix or wherever I encourage you to take the time to enjoy it.  It is a bittersweet story but one that is powerful nonetheless.

About jerryduck47@yahoo.com

Born in Boston's South End where I spent my early childhood. I remember going to matinees at The National Theatre where for ten cents I could sit in the balcony and enjoy two feature films, a cartoon and a serial. Those were the days! We moved to Western Mass (the country) and I completed my education through college there. I served in the U.S. Army with the 101st Airborne Division and went on to work for Bristol Myers Squibb for thirty years; traveling all over he world. Since retiring, have lived in Tallahassee, Fl and Leesburg, VA while raising our youngest son, Jake. My wife, Jennifer and I currently split our time between homes in Florida and Maine. We have three great kids (Shawn, Shannon & Jake), two wonderful kids "in law" ( Jenn & Steve) and five amazing grandchildren (Connor, Shana, Sophia, Bodie, & Sully). Hope this site offers them an opportunity to see another side of "Dad", "Jerryman" and "Grandpa"! Since retire
