“Hunt for the Wilderpeople”

I rushed out for a noon showing of this film figuring it likely would have a short run.  I am so glad I did.  Once again, I was the only patron in the theater!

This New Zealand based film is directed by relative newcomer Taika Waititi.  He’s a stand up comedian and actor but recently has focused more on writing and directing.  He plays a bit role in the movie as a minster at a funeral.  His scene is hilarious and for some reason brought back memories of Father Guido Sarducci (Don Novello), of Saturday Night Live fame.

The plot centers around a rebellious overweight teenager who is taken in by foster parents in the bush country after bouncing in and out of juvenile detention and numerous foster homes.  Bella, his new foster mom is a loving carefree person but her beau, Hector is not so thrilled with the new kid in the house.  Tragedy strikes and the Child Protection people write that they will have to come to retrieve the child and search for a new home.

The rap loving, quick talking haiku writing teenager wants to stay in the bush with Hector,  so they go on the run and a lighthearted national manhunt ensues to save the child.  The film is broken into chapters with catchy titles and it is a delight to watch it all unfold while taking in the glorious New Zealand scenery.

The cast is terrific, led by the wonderful Sam Neill.  I have thoroughly enjoyed his portrayal of the sadistic Inspector Campbell in “Peaky Blinders” and it’s nice to see him take on a fun loving role as a foster dad to a precocious kid.  The foster child, Ricky Baker is played to perfection by a young New Zealander named Julian Dennison.

The supporting cast is solid and the interactions between the duo on the run and those they come across along the way are entertaining and often very funny.

Be on the lookout for this diamond in the rough.  If it shows up in a theater within reach, do yourself a favor and get out to see it.  I think you’ll be happy you did.

About jerryduck47@yahoo.com

Born in Boston's South End where I spent my early childhood. I remember going to matinees at The National Theatre where for ten cents I could sit in the balcony and enjoy two feature films, a cartoon and a serial. Those were the days! We moved to Western Mass (the country) and I completed my education through college there. I served in the U.S. Army with the 101st Airborne Division and went on to work for Bristol Myers Squibb for thirty years; traveling all over he world. Since retiring, have lived in Tallahassee, Fl and Leesburg, VA while raising our youngest son, Jake. My wife, Jennifer and I currently split our time between homes in Florida and Maine. We have three great kids (Shawn, Shannon & Jake), two wonderful kids "in law" ( Jenn & Steve) and five amazing grandchildren (Connor, Shana, Sophia, Bodie, & Sully). Hope this site offers them an opportunity to see another side of "Dad", "Jerryman" and "Grandpa"! Since retire
