“Ingrid Goes West”

While playing on few screens, “Ingrid Goes West” is a nice diversion in the summer movie scene.  Written by Matt Spicer and David Branson Smith, and directed by Spicer, the film follows a somewhat unhinged Ingrid Thorburn, played by Aubrey Plaza, to LA where she stalks via Instagram the hip Taylor Sloan featuring Elizabeth Olsen, younger sister of the “Olsen twins”.

Plaza does a terrific job playing the brazen, kooky, social media addict and perpetual wannabe.  A decent inheritance allows her to embark upon the ill conceived adventure to create a new and better life.  Her emotional health is off the charts in the wrong direction and she manages to make one bad decision after another.

The casting is excellent and solid performances are delivered by Plaza along with Olsen.  They are ably supported by O’Shea Jackson Jr. (son of rapper Ice Cube), Wyatt Russell as Ezra, Taylor Sloan’s erstwhile artist husband, and Billy Magnussen as Nicky, Taylor’s scumbag brother.  The film depicts the stereotypical LA life of the self described albeit lower class “beautiful people”.  Ingrid cleverly inserts herself into the life and relishes her friendship with her idol in Taylor Sloan.

Things of course go terribly wrong.  There  are many cringe worthy moments and more than a few laughs to keep the audience entertained.

While not for everyone (especially if black comedy is not your thing), I found the effort noteworthy and look forward to more work by Spicer and Smith.

About jerryduck47@yahoo.com

Born in Boston's South End where I spent my early childhood. I remember going to matinees at The National Theatre where for ten cents I could sit in the balcony and enjoy two feature films, a cartoon and a serial. Those were the days! We moved to Western Mass (the country) and I completed my education through college there. I served in the U.S. Army with the 101st Airborne Division and went on to work for Bristol Myers Squibb for thirty years; traveling all over he world. Since retiring, have lived in Tallahassee, Fl and Leesburg, VA while raising our youngest son, Jake. My wife, Jennifer and I currently split our time between homes in Florida and Maine. We have three great kids (Shawn, Shannon & Jake), two wonderful kids "in law" ( Jenn & Steve) and five amazing grandchildren (Connor, Shana, Sophia, Bodie, & Sully). Hope this site offers them an opportunity to see another side of "Dad", "Jerryman" and "Grandpa"! Since retire
