“La La Land”

When I first saw a trailer for this film I am pretty sure I groaned.  Ryan Gosling as a song and dance man?  I don’t think so!  After reading a few blurbs about the production, I drove the 30 miles to the only theater in the area playing it…..hundreds of kids in the parking lot on break but surely they are seeing other films.  SOLD OUT!!!!  Back home I went.  The next day I bought three tickets in advance online and decided to take my wife and 88 year old aunt to the late morning showing.  Good move since it was sold out again.  The theater is avant-garde garden with “reserved seating” and reclining seats.  Beautiful!

As the film opened I felt like I had been transported into another time and place, specifically the 50’s.  The bright colors, the music and the “shown in CinemaScope” set the stage.  The opening scene is mesmerizing.

Gosling and Stone are absolutely perfect together and they make this major departure from today’s film fare spectacular.

Damien Chazelle of “Whiplash” fame wrote and directed this masterpiece.  About to turn 32, this fellow has an incredible future.  Hats off to everyone and anyone who agreed to fund this endeavor.  It could not have been easy to make it happen but his success with the fantastic “Whiplash” certainly helped.

I am a big Gosling fan and loved his performance in “Drive”,  and enjoyed his venture into comedy with Russell Crowe in “The Nice Guys”.   He shows off his incredible versatility here and even learned to  play piano.  I was amazed at his prowess throughout and humbled in that I can’t do any of it.  Emma Stone is his perfect partner.  After seeing her in “Easy A” awhile back I knew that a star had arrived.  She will have little trouble finding work for years to come.

“La La Land” will be on every screen by now.  Rush out to see it, recliner seats or not.  Don’t expect an everyday movie experience but rather an uplifting beautiful time.

After its Golden Globe coup, expect “La La Land” to score big come Oscar time.  The two leads and director are sure to contend.

Born in Boston's South End where I spent my early childhood. I remember going to matinees at The National Theatre where for ten cents I could sit in the balcony and enjoy two feature films, a cartoon and a serial. Those were the days! We moved to Western Mass (the country) and I completed my education through college there. I served in the U.S. Army with the 101st Airborne Division and went on to work for Bristol Myers Squibb for thirty years; traveling all over he world. Since retiring, have lived in Tallahassee, Fl and Leesburg, VA while raising our youngest son, Jake. My wife, Jennifer and I currently split our time between homes in Florida and Maine. We have three great kids (Shawn, Shannon & Jake), two wonderful kids "in law" ( Jenn & Steve) and five amazing grandchildren (Connor, Shana, Sophia, Bodie, & Sully). Hope this site offers them an opportunity to see another side of "Dad", "Jerryman" and "Grandpa"! Since retire
