I just returned from a great week at Sundance and immediately zipped out to see “Room” which was not in local theaters before I left. What a treat!
Brie Larson who plays “Ma” to Jacob Tremblay’s “Jack” share the screen for most of the film. It is hard to believe that a film can be captivating within the confines of a tiny room, but director Lenny Abrahamson accomplishes that and so much more.
The movie opens with Ma and Jack living life in “Room” as they call it. It is Jack’s world, the only one he has known. At five years old he is in many ways a typical curious child but his perspective is hauntingly limited with only a small skylight to the outside world. This is his universe and he makes the most of it with the loving help of captive “Ma”.
I cannot say enough about the performance of Jacob Tremblay. He is astounding. Credit has to go to Abrahamson and Ms. Larson for their roles in bringing this performance to the fore.
I won’t go into the entire plot line of “Room”. Suffice to say, this is a taut, emotional film which is at times tough to watch and tough to imagine. It is sure to vie for Oscars soon. See it.
I read the novel a few years ago. As soon as the movie came out, it was on my list of must-sees. I also read a very interesting interview with
Brie Larson regarding her preparation with Jacob for doing film. Looking forward to seeing this one!
It is a superb piece of work.
