“Sophie and the Rising Sun”

This film was my overall favorite from Sundance.  Set in 1941 South Carolina, just prior to Pearl Harbor,  a bus heading to Miami makes its stop in Salty Creek, South Carolina and off comes a badly beaten young Asian man with no identification.  The people in this low country town have never seen someone like him and the prejudice sets in immediately from whites and blacks alike.

Enter the amazing Margo Martindale (The Americans, August:Osage County, The Good Wife, Million Dollar Baby).  She brilliantly plays Anne Morrison, a kind hearted war widow who is called upon to take the foreigner in and get him on his way.

Takashi Yamaguchi is cast in the role of the stranger, Grover Ohta.  He is a relative newcomer who was seen in Eastwood’s “Letters from Iwo Jima”.   His English in real life is spotty but his delivery in the film as an educated Japanese man is flawless thanks he says to help from the cast.  The exchanges between him and Martindale and his touching relationship with Sophie Willis (Julianne Nicholson) are moving and memorable.

Southern hospitality is on display here with an equal if not greater measure of distrust and racial bias.

I must comment on the scene stealing performance by Lorraine Toussaint who plays Anne’s newly hired maid.  She has a sassy yet dignified flair and can deliver an attitude with a glance.  From a supporting role she added much to the richness of the film.

Maggie Greenwald’s deft direction delivers a beautiful film with a look back on a dark time in our history,  and a not so subtle warning shot to all of us to be wary of going back there.

I loved this movie.  Some may argue that it’s a bit predictable but I am okay with that.  The story, the cinematography and the performances make for a most satisfying experience.  I hope it gets picked up and enjoys a wide release.

About jerryduck47@yahoo.com

Born in Boston's South End where I spent my early childhood. I remember going to matinees at The National Theatre where for ten cents I could sit in the balcony and enjoy two feature films, a cartoon and a serial. Those were the days! We moved to Western Mass (the country) and I completed my education through college there. I served in the U.S. Army with the 101st Airborne Division and went on to work for Bristol Myers Squibb for thirty years; traveling all over he world. Since retiring, have lived in Tallahassee, Fl and Leesburg, VA while raising our youngest son, Jake. My wife, Jennifer and I currently split our time between homes in Florida and Maine. We have three great kids (Shawn, Shannon & Jake), two wonderful kids "in law" ( Jenn & Steve) and five amazing grandchildren (Connor, Shana, Sophia, Bodie, & Sully). Hope this site offers them an opportunity to see another side of "Dad", "Jerryman" and "Grandpa"! Since retire
