“The Favourite”

Films depicting British royalty always attract my attention. That, and the fact that it starred Rachel Weisz, Emma Stone and my new “favorite” Olivia Colman made this a must see. It is not on a whole lot of screens so you may have to hunt a bit for it, but it’s worth the hunt.

The story is set in early 18th century England with the zany Queen Anne (Olivia Colman) as ruler. Her performance is one for the books and I will be very surprised if the Academy overlooks it. Playing opposite her and vying for her every affection are Lady Sarah (Rachel Weisz) and Abigail (Emma Stone). They both measure up beautifully and deliver top notch and wildly entertaining performances.

Queen Anne is portrayed as nuttier than a fruitcake. After each of her miscarriages she adds another live rabbit to her chambers. I am not kidding! Lady Sarah pretty much runs the show by acquiescing to many of the Queen’s wishes and desires. Enter Abigail, a young impoverished girl who once had status. The Queen and Lady Sarah take her in as a servant and she begins to work her magic on the Queen in an effort supplant Sarah.

The acting throughout is superb. Colman is beyond good. She portrays Queen Elizabeth in the most recent chapter of “The Crown” which I will not miss. There are lots of laughs to be had especially taking in the costumes of the day, to include the male players with their lavish wigs and heavy makeup.

I have little idea how accurate historically the film is, but it is a lot of fun and sad at times as well. I found the ending quite strange and disturbing, but upon thinking about it for awhile I think it was fitting.

If you enjoy royalty films and terrific acting start your hunt for “The Favourite”. It is worth going a bit out of your way.

Born in Boston's South End where I spent my early childhood. I remember going to matinees at The National Theatre where for ten cents I could sit in the balcony and enjoy two feature films, a cartoon and a serial. Those were the days! We moved to Western Mass (the country) and I completed my education through college there. I served in the U.S. Army with the 101st Airborne Division and went on to work for Bristol Myers Squibb for thirty years; traveling all over he world. Since retiring, have lived in Tallahassee, Fl and Leesburg, VA while raising our youngest son, Jake. My wife, Jennifer and I currently split our time between homes in Florida and Maine. We have three great kids (Shawn, Shannon & Jake), two wonderful kids "in law" ( Jenn & Steve) and five amazing grandchildren (Connor, Shana, Sophia, Bodie, & Sully). Hope this site offers them an opportunity to see another side of "Dad", "Jerryman" and "Grandpa"! Since retire
