Samuel Jackson, Ryan Reynolds, Gary Oldman and Salma Hayek…..what could possibly go wrong? Pretty much everything! I was sure that this would be a fun romp of a film and settled in for it all to unfold. After thirty minutes or so I started to squirm.
Ryan Reynolds plays a self described “AAA Security” bodyguard who has a job go terribly wrong and along with it his reputation. While nibbling for dollars guarding lowlifes, he gets a call from an old flame played by the lovely Elodie Yung. His task is to deliver notorious hit man Darius Kincaid (Samuel Jackson) to testify in The Hague against a Belarus war criminal played by perennial madman, Gary Oldman.
So far, so good. It’s all downhill from there. The majority of the film revolves around chase scenes and killings. I enjoy all of that but this movie relies on that alone for its energy with terrible dialogue alongside. Profanity is a given in much of today’s entertainment but this film takes it to a whole new unnecessary level. F bombs are tossed around from everyone in the cast to the point of ludicrousness. Even Salma Hayek joins in the bombardment.
While there a a few (very few) funny lines to be had, overall I found the experience to be tiresome and pretty much a waste of time. My advice, skip this one and stay tuned for a much better film, hopefully “Wind River” which just opened in a few theaters.
AWW…too bad. I love Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson!
