“The Good Dinosaur”

Since many of my peers are grandparents I thought I would venture out and catch a peek at Pixar’s latest effort, The Good Dinosaur.  I usually avoid kids’ movies but when I do take one in I am usually impressed, and this one is no exception.  The film is beautifully shot with Pixar’s usual amazing animation.

Arlo, a little dinosaur with a fear of everything problem, is the youngest of three who lives with his family on a beautiful farm in the mountains.  It is fun to watch a dinosaur family work a farm!

The uber talented Jeffrey Wright (Basquiat) is the voice of Poppa, while wonderful Frances McDormand (Fargo) voices Momma.

In an effort to build some character and confidence into little Arlo, Poppa takes him off on a brief adventure.  As often happens, a terrible storm floods the river and Arlo and Poppa are separated leaving Arlo to fend for himself in the wild.  It’s a frightful experience but Arlo befriends a cave boy and the two of them team up to survive.  There is an abundance of creativity in the characters built into the story including a Tyrannosaurus Rex-like Longhorn cattle rancher with the great voice of Sam Elliott (The Big Lebowski and many more).

There are more than a few tear jerking moments in the movie.  Yes, even yours truly can get teared up over sad moments in an animated dinosaur movie complete with farms and cattle ranching!

So, if you are asked to watch the kids while Mom and Dad go Christmas shopping, take them to see Arlo and his friends.  You’ll be happy you did.

About jerryduck47@yahoo.com

Born in Boston's South End where I spent my early childhood. I remember going to matinees at The National Theatre where for ten cents I could sit in the balcony and enjoy two feature films, a cartoon and a serial. Those were the days! We moved to Western Mass (the country) and I completed my education through college there. I served in the U.S. Army with the 101st Airborne Division and went on to work for Bristol Myers Squibb for thirty years; traveling all over he world. Since retiring, have lived in Tallahassee, Fl and Leesburg, VA while raising our youngest son, Jake. My wife, Jennifer and I currently split our time between homes in Florida and Maine. We have three great kids (Shawn, Shannon & Jake), two wonderful kids "in law" ( Jenn & Steve) and five amazing grandchildren (Connor, Shana, Sophia, Bodie, & Sully). Hope this site offers them an opportunity to see another side of "Dad", "Jerryman" and "Grandpa"! Since retire
