Based on the novel of the same title, the story revolves around Joan Castleman (Close) and her husband Joe Castleman (Jonathan Pryce). After a string of highly successful novels and major critical acclaim he is chosen to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature. Off the family travels to Stockholm for the ultimate recognition and honor. The acting throughout is brilliant. This is not surprising given Close’s six Oscar nominations and Pryce’s legendary status on stage and screen.
Christian Slater does a nice turn as a biographer intent on landing the author’s life story. He stalks the Castlemans all the way to Stockholm and back traveling on the now grounded Concorde. Slater’s scenes with Close are mesmerizing. They bring out the best in each other.
The film has the feel of a stage play and would make for compelling theater. The scenes portrayed at the Nobel Award venue are fun to watch, complete with the King and Queen of Sweden.
There are a few twists and turns in the story that will not be revealed here. Suffice to say that this is a strong movie with superb performances. It’s not playing on too many screens and will likely finish its run soon. Try to catch it soon but if you miss it take the time to enjoy it on Netflix or wherever it lands down the road.
