This is a tough movie to watch. Drug addiction and its devastating effect on the addict and everyone around them is gut wrenching to say the least. The success rate post rehab is terrible with many drugs, in this case crystal meth.
This is a true story based largely on the book by David Sheff as well as on a memoir of his addict son Nic Shef entitled “Tweak”.
I found the film to be dark, depressing, sad and seemingly hopeless, and rightfully so given the subject matter.
The performances are solid throughout but the film belongs to relative newcomer Timothée Chalamet. He garnered an Oscar nomination last year for his stirring performance opposite Armie Hammer in “Call me by your Name”. He equals and maybe surpasses that performance here. If there is a natural in this business he is it. His scenes are all memorable, some heartbreaking, others heartwarming especially those with his little brother.
Look for Chalamet come Oscar time. If you want to see addiction up close with all of its heartbreak and tragedy check this movie out. It won’t put a spring in your step but it might offer up some hope.
