“Bohemian Rhapsody”

“Bohemian Rhapsody” was a must see for me from the get go!  I chose to hit a midday matinee in an IMAX venue.  I figured that “Queen” music deserved the best visual and sound I could find.  It was a good decision!

The film opens and closes at the momentous “Live Aid” concert at Wembley Stadium.  The recreation of this legendary “Queen” performance is stunning.  I felt as though I were among the enormous waves of adoring fans witnessing one of Freddie Mercury ‘s finest and most emotional performances.  Recently diagnosed with AIDS, Mercury gives it his all and leaves nothing to chance.

The film is deftly directed by Bryan Singer whose previous efforts included the fantastic “Usual Suspects” and “X-Men”.

The storyline carries us from Freddie’s early days trying to find his place while disappointing his father with his cavalier attitude.  He gets his shot when a local pub band’s lead singer quits leaving a void.  Freddie does an impromptu audition that was not solicited and the history of “Queen” begins.

Rami Malek of “Mr.Robot” fame plays the lead.  I can’t imagine anyone doing it better. He is absolutely brilliant from start to finish.  Filling his mouth with Freddie-like teeth makes the experience all the more real.  This is Malek’s film and he delivers fully.

The supporting cast is solid throughout.  The casting for every single role is spot on.   Aiden Gillen who is best known as the scoundrel “Littlefinger” in “Game of Thrones” is manager John Reid.  His band members are dead ringers for the real guys and they deliver excellent performances.  Lucy Boynton, best known as the young Beatrice Potter in “Miss Potter” plays the female love of his life, Mary Austin.  Mike Myers makes an unexpected appearance as Ray Foster, the early on money guy funding the band.

If you appreciate Queen’s rocking one of a kind music, you will love this film.  If you aren’t sure if you like it, you’ll still love it!  Go enjoy this experience.  See it in IMAX if you can.

Thank God HIV is treateable today.  It’s just sad that it wasn’t for Freddie Mercury and thousands of others in the 80’s and 90’s.

Born in Boston's South End where I spent my early childhood. I remember going to matinees at The National Theatre where for ten cents I could sit in the balcony and enjoy two feature films, a cartoon and a serial. Those were the days! We moved to Western Mass (the country) and I completed my education through college there. I served in the U.S. Army with the 101st Airborne Division and went on to work for Bristol Myers Squibb for thirty years; traveling all over he world. Since retiring, have lived in Tallahassee, Fl and Leesburg, VA while raising our youngest son, Jake. My wife, Jennifer and I currently split our time between homes in Florida and Maine. We have three great kids (Shawn, Shannon & Jake), two wonderful kids "in law" ( Jenn & Steve) and five amazing grandchildren (Connor, Shana, Sophia, Bodie, & Sully). Hope this site offers them an opportunity to see another side of "Dad", "Jerryman" and "Grandpa"! Since retire
