“Phantom Thread”

Daniel Day-Lewis is an international treasure. From “Last of the Mohicans”, “My Left Foot”, “Lincoln”, “My Beautiful Laundrette” and “There Will be Blood” he has wowed audiences for decades. It’s little surprise that he has done it once again. Sadly, he announced upon completion that he is retiring from acting. Let’s hope that this declaration is the result of sheer emotional exhaustion from the demanding  role of dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock.

This is a gorgeous film from start to finish. Director Paul Thomas Anderson who brought us the stunning “There Will be Blood” has delivered another masterpiece.

Daniel Day-Lewis has been nominated for five Oscars and has won three. He will be a strong contender for a fourth.

Set in 1950’s London, Reynolds Woodcock is a leading dressmaker from the House of Woodcock whose clients are the “Who’s Who” of the day. He is fastidious and a workaholic who is guided and protected by his sister Cyril, played brilliantly by Lesley Manville. She has teamed up with the talented writer and Director Mike Leigh in “Another Year” and “Topsy-Turvy”. Rounding out the stellar cast is Luxembourg born Vicky Krieps.  Ms. Krieps delivers a stunning performance and we will no doubt see much more of her in the years ahead.

Woodcock happens upon Alma (Vicky Krieps) when she serves him breakfast at a country inn.  She captivates the artist and he spontaneously invites her to dinner after which she becomes his muse and ultimately lover and wife.

All three lead characters deliver Oscar worthy performances.  This, coupled with brilliant direction, cinematography and score results in a mesmerizing artistic piece of work.  I am sure that I will venture out for a second viewing.  Please don’t let this be Day-Lewis’s final performance, but if it is what a way to go out!

If you love a complex story, top notch acting, directing perfection and beautiful music, much of it original, treat yourself to “Phantom Thread”.

About jerryduck47@yahoo.com

Born in Boston's South End where I spent my early childhood. I remember going to matinees at The National Theatre where for ten cents I could sit in the balcony and enjoy two feature films, a cartoon and a serial. Those were the days! We moved to Western Mass (the country) and I completed my education through college there. I served in the U.S. Army with the 101st Airborne Division and went on to work for Bristol Myers Squibb for thirty years; traveling all over he world. Since retiring, have lived in Tallahassee, Fl and Leesburg, VA while raising our youngest son, Jake. My wife, Jennifer and I currently split our time between homes in Florida and Maine. We have three great kids (Shawn, Shannon & Jake), two wonderful kids "in law" ( Jenn & Steve) and five amazing grandchildren (Connor, Shana, Sophia, Bodie, & Sully). Hope this site offers them an opportunity to see another side of "Dad", "Jerryman" and "Grandpa"! Since retire
