“Rampage”

I’ve always loved horror movies, from “Godzilla” to “Alien”.  I also love “The Rock”.  Put the two together, not so much.  I recently came off of a three day silent retreat and it was too late to catch a flight home so I booked a room near the airport.  As luck would have it there were a few decent restaurants nearby and a casino!  I polished off a steak and asked the server if there might be a theater nearby.  There was a huge modern AMC steps away.  I checked my IMDb app to see what was playing and “Rampage” fit the time slot.

Off I went, turning away from the lure of the casino and the big score to be with “The Rock” for a few hours.  The theater was gorgeous.  It had a bar and big recliner seats, and a top quality sound system.  I grabbed a tumbler of red wine, found my assigned big recliner, and settled in to fight the monsters with Dwayne Johnson.

It wasn’t long before I was wishing I was at a Black Jack table.  The setup was pretty good: a mysterious pathogen infects some animals causing them to grow at an alarming rate and threaten mankind.  Davis Okoye (Johnson) is a primatologist who has a close relationship with the infected gorilla, “George”.

There is plenty of action to be sure with monster fights worthy of “Godzilla”.  The dialogue and disjointed plot is what killed the movie.  Much of it is just plain dumb, which is okay but it needs to be funny.  It wasn’t.  Maybe coming off of a silent retreat is not the best frame of mind for this genre, but I don’t think that was the case.

As a side note, a young actor named Jake Lacy who hails from my hometown of Greenfield, Massachusetts has a major role in the movie.  He previously appeared in “Carol”starring Kate Blanchett.  While this role won’t make his highlight reel, it’s great to see him finding work in the tough and tumble movie world.

All in all, I have to give a Roger Ebert “thumbs down” to “Rampage”.  I expect there will be many who enjoy this film, but I am not among them.

Born in Boston's South End where I spent my early childhood. I remember going to matinees at The National Theatre where for ten cents I could sit in the balcony and enjoy two feature films, a cartoon and a serial. Those were the days! We moved to Western Mass (the country) and I completed my education through college there. I served in the U.S. Army with the 101st Airborne Division and went on to work for Bristol Myers Squibb for thirty years; traveling all over he world. Since retiring, have lived in Tallahassee, Fl and Leesburg, VA while raising our youngest son, Jake. My wife, Jennifer and I currently split our time between homes in Florida and Maine. We have three great kids (Shawn, Shannon & Jake), two wonderful kids "in law" ( Jenn & Steve) and five amazing grandchildren (Connor, Shana, Sophia, Bodie, & Sully). Hope this site offers them an opportunity to see another side of "Dad", "Jerryman" and "Grandpa"! Since retire

  1. For what it was – A Nancy Movie – it filled a couple hours for us. Modern AMC, recliners, 2nd to last row from the back in the middle.
